Penang Hokkien Mee @ Chef Li's, Petaling Jaya
Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya, Selangor - May 2016
UPDATE JULY 2016: Chef Li had relocated to Ho Chaz Restaurant in Kota Damansara. See updated address & location below. Also below is his updated menu (that includes Penang Laksa & Century-egg congee).

Coming from Penang, I am sort of addicted to Penang Hokkien Mee, (or as some would call it - Penang Prawn Mee) always on the look out for good ones. There are many up in Penang, but down in the Klang Valley it's hard to find one that's up to mark.
That is until one morning, I sauntered into the place called Restoran Kepong Crab. It's a place that sells crabby dishes in the evening and during the day it's a coffee-shop which offers some pretty good street food, and I dare say the Hokkien Mee here is one of the better ones in the Klang Valley.
The ingredient that makes good Hokkien Mee is always the soup, Chef Li's one was tasty with a good but not overly strong taste of prawns. And on top of that he gives fairly large sized prawns (un-sliced ala KL style). The prawns were good but could have been better if instead of the red-shell prawns, white-shell ones were used instead as these have softer and tastier meat.

And here's the soup.... two big pots of it; nice flavoured soup with a good underlying prawny flavour. Perhaps he could improve on it by filtering it more while cooking so that it will be a clearer soup.

For those who want the extra oomph!; add on these nasty looking but tender pork ribs which are cooked in the prawn soup.

And here's the man himself. I have known Chef Li for a long time and am glad to see that he has got his recipe right. Do pop in to savour his Penang Hokkien Mee, it's one of the better ones in the Klang Valley.
