SHARK-MEAT SOUP @ KEONG HING SEAFOOD
Sungai Besar, Selangor, Malaysia - September 2014
We were on our way back to Kuala Lumpur after bike-packing from Ipoh to Teluk Intan. Instead of the highway we decided to use the coastal road back. This brought us past some fishing villages & towns for some good seafood lunches. Sekinchan is always a nice place to eat, but wanting to avoid the crowd on a Sunday, we decided to turn into Sungai Besar instead and had our lunch at Keong Hing Seafood. Aren't we glad that we did because other than avoiding the tourist crowd we did have some good food. One that stood out was the Shark Meat Soup.

But before going for the shark, let's have a simple dish - Stir-fried Mixed Vegetables - to whet our appetites. This was a mix of cauliflower, button mushrooms, green chillies, carrots; a clean wholesome green diet.

This hot plate of tofu really made us hot, all heated up to try it.

Another simple dish but these slices of round Japanese tofu were like nuggets, deep fried to a golden hue. The tofu were of thicker slices making them exude more soy flavour. The thin crispy skin held in the juiciness until a bite is taken. These came with a medley of chunkier cuts of mushrooms, both Chinese Black and Button.

Red Snapper Stir-fried In Bean Paste Sauce.
Small slab cut of Red Snapper fish were stir-fried in a thin bean paste gravy, garnished with slices of onions and strips of ginger. The gravy, although made with bean paste was not  overly salty. With a tinge of sweetness and a touch of Chinese White Wine, it went very well with the freshness of the fish.

And the dish came with one of my weakness - thick fish skin; one that's thick but not to the extent of rubbery thick; just nice to bite into ...... Oh.... My...

Finally, the dish that we specifically came here to savour - Shark Meat Soup!
The soup was ala Teochew Style, cooked with cubes of white tofu, salted vegetables, tomatoes and some slices of onions. The slight sourness of the tomatoes and salted veggies had extracted the essence of the shark meat into the soup..... SWEET!
Every once in a while I took a bite of the plain tofu, a sort of mouth wash to get myself ready for more of the sweet soup.

Don't get the wrong picture; we did not sink our teeth into one of those Great Whites. These are Dog Fish, a much smaller fish but still of the shark species. Their meat is tender, free of any bones as this is a boneless fish, making it easier to eat.
